본 논문은 시너지 창출활동을 수행하는 과정에서 발생하는 일련의 어려움, 즉 시너지의 실행비용에 관한 사안을 다룬다. 기존의 다각화 연구는 시너지의 잠재성이 시너지 창출활동에 미치는 긍정적인 영향을 규명하는 데에만 치중했기 때문에 실행 상의 문제에 대한 논의는 사실상 많은 관심을 두지 않았다. 이에 따라 본 논문은 시너지의 잠재성이 시너지 창출활동에 미치는 긍정적인 영향과 함께, 시너지의 실행비용의 부정적인 영향을 균형 있게 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 시너지의 실행비용을 시너지의 창출과정에 따라 탐색비용, 이동비용, 활용비용의 3가지 유형으로 구분한 후, 사업부문 간의 관련성과 시너지의 실행비용들이 시너지 창출활동에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 분석결과 사업부문 간의 관련성은 시너지 창출활동에 긍정적인 영향을, 탐색비용은 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 이동비용과 활용비용은 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 또한 탐색비용, 이동비용, 활용비용은 각각 사업부문 간의 관련성이 시너지 창출활동에 미치는 긍정적인 영향을 제한하는 것으로 확인되었다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 통해 탐색비용, 이동비용, 활용비용은 모두 시너지의 잠재성을 실현하지 못하도록 제한하지만, 경영자가 시너지 플랜의 실행여부를 판단할 때는 탐색비용만을 고려한다는 결론을 얻을 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study explores synergy implementation costs or a series of difficulties to proceed a cooperation scheme. Existing diversification research has been interested in verifying an inter-SBU relatedness to execute synergy activity, but it ignores negative determinants. In order to find a balance between the bright and the dark sides of the collaboration process, not only synergy implementation costs to hinder a joint work but also a potential factor to facilitate it in contrast should be addressed together in a single research model. For that purpose, synergy implementation costs are classified into the investigation cost, the travel cost, and the utilization cost according to the process to draw synergy effect and the main and the combined effects of the inter-SBU relatedness and the three costs on synergy activity are examined. The empirical results indicate that the inter-SBU relatedness affects synergy activity in a positive way, while the investigation cost affects it in a negative way. Also, the travel cost and the utilization cost have insignificant influences on it. Each of the three costs is turned out to restrict the positive influence of the inter-SBU relatedness on synergy activity. It means that each of the interactions between the inter-SBU relatedness and the investigation cost, the inter-SBU relatedness and the travel cost, and the inter-SBU relatedness and the utilization cost affects synergy activity in a negative way. The research results show that each of the synergy implementation costs could constrain a synergy potential to realize, but a firm is tend to worry about only the investigation cost when it makes a decision to carry out a synergy plan.
