Abstract
The meaning of Vernacular design includes non-mainstream cha- racteristics of local and native aspects whose authorship is unknown, which have occurred spontaneously. That is to say, design which has no official and purposeful plan. The meaning seems to be behind the times, but it has a little clarity which is never found in current design. That's because design is influenced by nature such as culture and climate, and developed into a new form in nature. Jeju culture is a part of Korean culture but it has its own distinct culture and customs influenced by the Jeju natural environment and historical background. Jeju local culture is inherited by the offspring from one generation to the next in the Jeju natural environment. We can deduce various vernacular designs from the Jeju natural environment and lifestyle. This thesis aims to find out the meaning of vernacular design and its protocols by examining Jeju Onggi and volcanic rock. This thesis shows a new method and way by which Jeju ceramic design can be understood by analyzing vernacular design. By using basalt and its unique tactile nature, manufactured goods were produced with new and important characteristics. This means that while Onggi has been just for saving something, the products I researched will allow for a new interpretation of our experiences as well as creating new experiences in the future. As a result of analyzing manufactured products (the object of my research), we can find out from Jeju Onggi, the original vernacular and other vernacular (basalt) engraft, when the second vernacular design is formed. This goal of my thesis is to rediscover Jeju culture and to reevaluate its significant and distinctive nature. This will allow an important aspect of Korean culture to pass from one generation to the next and thus be preserved. This research can facilitate the continued advancement of Jeju ceramic design. Vernacular design is a dynamic phenomenon which has been developed in the context of a cultural background and will be connected to the future endlessly. In this way, the past culture is not just past culture, but will provide the basis for an ongoing cultural evolution that may one day form a new and distinct culture. I hope this approach will inspire a variety of new studies into how traditional culture influences ceramic design.
