Circuit Breaker 제도가 한국 주식시장 변동성과 유동성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

선행연구에 의하면 서킷 브레이커 제도가 시장의 변동성을 줄인다는 주장과 오히려 시장의 비효율성을 확대시켜 변동성을 증기시킨다는 주장이 대립하고 있다. 그래서 본 논문은 일별 및 1분 자료를 토대로 현물시장의 가격변동성, 비대칭적 변동성, 유동성 측면에서 현물 서킷 브레이커제도가 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 주요한 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서킷 브레이커로 인한 거래중단이 가격변동성에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 서킷 브레이커는 가격변동성을 단기적으로 줄여 서킷 브레이커 도입 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 코스피 시장보다는 코스닥 시장에서 더 효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 서킷 브레이커의 도입이 시장의 비대칭적 변동성에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 코스피 시장에서는 나쁜 뉴스(bad news)에 의한 가격하락을 완화하여 비대칭적 변동성을 통계적으로 유의하게 완화시키는 것으로 나왔다. 반면 서킷 브레이커의 도입이 코스닥 시장에서는 비대칭성 변동성을 유의적으로 완화하지 시키지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 서킷 브레이커로 인한 거래중단이 유동성에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 서킷 브레이커 발동 이후 유동성이 증가하여 거래장애 가설을 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 현물 서킷 브레이커 제도는 현물 시장의 변동성을 감소시켜 시장안정화 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 연구결과의 신뢰성을 높이기 위해서는 조사기간 및 표본 확대, 원인분석, 국내외 상호 비교분석 등 추가연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 판단된다.
Abstract
This study analyzes empirically the effect of Circuit Breakers on the price volatility and the liquidity of the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets. It also analyzes the effect of Circuit Breakers on the asymmetric volatility by comparing the volatility and the liquidity of the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets before and after the introduction of Circuit Breakers in Korea. The results of the study are as follows:First, we find that trading halts caused by Circuit Breakers has the influences on price volatility. The Circuit Breakers reduced the price volatility in the short time and the introduction of Circuit Breakers has bigger effects on KOSDAQ market than on KOSPI market. Second, we find that Circuit Breakers reduce the asymmetric volatility of KOSPI market but does not in KOSDAQ market. However, the coefficient of the asymmetric volatility of KOSDAQ market is not statistically significant. Finally, we find that trading halts caused by Circuit Breakers does not reduce the liquidity of the markets eventually. The volume after trading halts becomes rather larger than that before Circuit Breakers started.
