디자인 컨셉(design concept)으로서에스닉 컬러(ethnic color)의 활용가능성에 대한 연구 -공간 디자인 사례를 중심으로-

본 연구는 디자인 분야에 나타난 에스닉 컬러(ethnic color)에 대해 알아보고 하나의 디자인 컨셉으로서 그 활용가능성을 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 타국의 전통과 문화에서 보이는 이국적인 매력에 대한 관심 과 반응은 의식주를 다루는 여러 디자인 분야에서 민족적 양식(Ethnic Style: 에스닉 스타일)이라는 디자 인 흐름을 만들어 내었다. 에스닉 스타일에서 무엇보다 돋보여지는 것은 각 양식마다 가지고 있는 독특한 저마다의 색상과 색조이다. 이 에스닉 컬러는 특정 민족이 가지는 자연경관이나 기후에 따른 자연적 요소나 그들의 색채의식, 전통 복식, 음식, 건축물, 공예, 종교, 문화나 축제 등에서 발견되는 문화적 요소에 의해 영향을 받는다.본 연구에서는 먼저 ‘에스닉 컬러’라는 용어의 정의와 그 형성 요인을 살펴보았고, 순수 예술과 디자인분야에 끼쳐온 영향들을 정리해보았다. 또한 어떤 공간의 용도와 이미지에 쓰일 수 있는지, 어떤 방법들을 통해 활용이 가능한지 몇 개의 사례연구를 통해 살펴봄으로써 하나의 공간 디자인 컨셉으로서 에스닉 컬 러가 가지는 위치를 검증하고 그 활용가능성을 제시하고자 하였다.
Abstract
This research explores the potential energy of ethnic color as a “design concept” by analyzing ethnic colors having used in design field. Continuing attention and response to the exotic attraction illustrated in foreign tradition and culture creates “Ethnic Style” in various design fields. In Ethnic Style, the most outstanding feature is its unique color which found in each ethnic environment. Ethnic color comes from the natural environment where each ethno-people has inhabited such as landscapes and weather, and is reflected in traditional costume, food, architecture, crafts, and religious arts.This research started with conceptualizing the ‘Ethnic Color’; Defining its terms, looking into its backgrounds and examining the impacts of it to fine arts and various design fields. Then, this research suggested the possibilities of application of ethnic color for “a space design concept” through case studies about resort hotels with ethnic colors.
