부품소재기업의 연구개발투자와 비용효율성의 관련성에 관한 실증연구

초록
본 연구는 최근 급격하게 증가되고 있는 연구개발 투자가 부품소재기업의 지식습득, 교육훈련, 연구기자재 확충 등을 통해 기업의 생산물 산출구조나 생산요소 투입구조에 영향을 미쳐 비용구조 변화에 어떠한 변화를 초래했는가에 관한 결과를 알아보고자 2001년부터 2006년까지 지식경제부에서 시행하고 있는 부품소재상(部品素材賞)을 수상한 78개 기업의 재무제표 자료를 수집하여 기업의 비용함수를 추정하고 규모의 경제성 존재유무를 추정하였다. 기업의 비용함수를 추정하기 위하여 전통적 다품목 초월대수 비용함수(Multi-production Transcendental Logarithmic Cost Function) 모형을 확장하여 연구개발자본투자 효과를 고려한 모형으로 추정하였고 규모의 경제를 확인하는 방법으로 방사형규모의 경제(Ray scale economies)를 이용하여 산출하였다. 분석 결과, 부품소재 대기업 및 중소기업은 연구개발이 기업의 생산물 산출구조나 생산요소의 투입구조에 영향을 미쳐 비용구조에 변화를 초래한다는 결과를 보이고 있다. 또한 규모의 경제 추정결과에서 대기업 및 중소기업은 규모의 경제를 시현하고 있으며 향후 특화된 부품소재를 중심으로 연구개발투자를 더욱 확대시켜야 함을 시사하고 있다. 아울러 대기업은 통계적으로 유의미한 매출액의 증가와 영업비용 절감 효과를 나타내는데 비해 중소기업은 통계적으로 유의미하지 않지만 매출액의 감소와 영업비용의 증가를 초래하는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 향후 실증분석 결과를 기반으로 우리나라 부품소재산업의 부문별 성장전략에 대한 실행계획수립이 요구된다.
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of Research and Development(R&D) investment to Materials & Components Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs). The cost efficiency was reviewed on the economies of scale. In particular, for the R&D component, focus was given to the variability of the data set. This data was used to compare the SMEs, resulting in 78 companies over the 6-years period from 2001 to 2006 to be awarded. To measure the economics of scale, the study utilized a large logarithmic cost function model. The translog variable cost function is employed to investigate how technological innovation due to R&D investment affects the variable cost. The results of this study provided useful insights and information for industry, as well as academic application, primarily because Large scale and SMEs have experienced similar economies of scale. The study suggests that investment in R&D investment causes an operation cost reduction. In addition, R&D investments played an important role in efficient operation for Large and SMEs. However, these investments can cause significant levels of cost and revenue efficiencies more than SMEs. This result implies that Korean M&C firms need to increase their scales by investing in R&D fields.
