Effect of an Infection Prevention Education Program on Knowledge of infection and Hand washing Performance for Nursing Students

The study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge of infection and hand washing performance after implement an infection prevention education program. Methods: This study was one group pre-post test design. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire between April to June, 2008 with a total of 107 nursing students. Result: The knowledge on infection prevention were significant differences in the following categories: general concepts of infection, handwashing and gloving, respiratory infection management, indwelling catheter management, GI tract management, wound management, drug and disinfectant management, preventing exposure to potential infectious patients, cleaning patient's room and laundry management. The mean frequency of hand washing was statistically increased and the performance of hand washing was improved significantly in the following activities: removed watches before hand washing, washing of back of hand, between of finger, thumb and fingernail. The decontaminating agent of hand washing was showed significant difference on the soap bar. The drying method after hand washing was significantly decreased on the gown and towel. The performance of hand washing was significant difference on 'before eating', 'after toilet' and 'after clinical practice' in daily living and clinical practice. Conclusion: This finding suggests that the infection prevention education program had a significant impact on knowledge and hand washing performance to the Nursing Students. It is necessary for continuous education to improve the knowledge of infection prevention and handwashing performance on Nursing Students
