테렌스 맬릭 Terrence Malick의 앙각 내레이션은2011년 칸 영화제 황금종려상 수상작인 <트리 오브 라이프 The Tree of life>에서 완성된 것으로 보인다. 그러나 실은 1973년의 첫 장편인 <황무지 Badlands>로부터 감독의 철학적인 세계관과 꾸준히 연결되어 있었다. 본 논문은 테렌스 맬릭이 삶의 본질에 접근하는 방식으로 구축한 앙각 내레이션의 흐름을 분석하고 그성과를 밝히는데 목적을 둔다. 두 편의 초기작은 그를신화적인 인물로 만들었는데, 10대 소녀의 순진한 내레이션 방식과 카메라 위치의 정밀함에서 비롯된 비전통적 완성도가 비결이었다. 20년의 침묵 이후 1998년에발표된 <씬 레드 라인 The Thin Red Line>은 그의 세계관이 집약된 성찰적인 영화였다. 여기서 선보인 다중내레이션은 나무와 하늘을 우러러 보는 카메라의 앙각과 결합하여 영화의 주된 정서를 지배했다. 이는 보이는 세계를 무한 확장하고 철학, 나아가 종교적인 내면을 세계의 표면으로 밀어내는 효과적인 장치였다. <트리 오브 라이프>는 앙각 내레이션이 핵심 주제인 영화이다
Abstract
Terrence Malick's Low Angle Narration seems to be completed in the film The Tree of Life awarded the Palm d'Or at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. In fact, his Low Angle Narration has steadily reflected his philosophical world-view since the first feature film,Badlands in 1973 was screened. This paper aims to analyze his Low Angle Narration hitherto kept up in the manner of approaching to the substance of life and reveal its outcomes. His early two films, which made him a legendary director, adapted teenage girls'naive narration style and accurate camera positions to reach to the non-traditional completion. After the twenty-year silence, he directed The Thin Red Line. The film reflected himself and summed up his view of the world with the cinematic device of multiple narrations combined with low angle looking up trees and the sky. Due to this core skill, the visible world has been extended limitlessly. Furthermore, his philosophical and thus religious inner world came up to the surface of the real world. The design of Low Angle Narration is the main theme in the film, The Tree of Life.
