Soundwalk is an activity which involves walking around one’s surrounding environment, listening to sounds, and thinking about the surrounding sound environment. I designed and implemented a Soundwalk curriculum as a basic sound education course for a university-level moving image design class. The purpose of this study is to propose a Soundwalk curriculum that can be utilized as a basic curriculum of moving image design by introducing the educational goals, process, and results of Soundwalk as conducted in an actual class. After reviewing the literature on Soundwalk, I initially summarized the learning goals and the progress of the Soundwalk curriculum. Afterwards, I described a typical example of Soundwalk conducted by students. Finally, I analyzed the results of a questionnaire created for students who took the Soundwalk course. An analysis of the questionnaire results revealed that Soundwalk was generally consistent with the learning objectives. Students generally became interested in sound through Soundwalk, Soundwalk was an enjoyable experience, and Soundwalk was thought to be useful as a basic sound curriculum for moving image design. Additionally, a small number of respondents suggested problems and improvements with Soundwalk. Soundwalk allows students to be conscious of the various sounds in their surroundings, making them sensitive to sound, and allowing them to learn the practical skills of sound recording. In sum, I find that Soundwalk is suitable for a basic sound curriculum for moving image design.
