The innovation of the internet: a semantic network analysis of the Internet of Things

The internet is evolving toward internet of everything. This study tracks the trends of academicresearch on Internet of Things (IoT) by examining Web of Science database using semanticnetwork analysis. Although past studies provided a lot of insights on technological aspects ofIoT, they have failed to investigate technological acceptance of the technology in academia,industry, and government. As the first step of such an analysis, this study analysed academiaperception of IoT using the analysis of words frequency, co-occurrence, and distance. Manyclusters were identified from the semantic network of 2017–2015 including smart home andsmart grid, sensor networking, physical networking, environmental monitoring and security,and cloud computing and big data. Suggestions for future studies are addressed.
