A Comparative Study of Korean, Chinese and Japanese Crane Patterns in Applied Art Design

The crane, with its exquisite form, poised attitude, genteel manners, and immaculate plumage, is a serene and harmonious creature. It has always been revered as a token of auspiciousness and longevity. The crane veneration is an ancient custom shared by China, Korea, and Japan. It originated in China and disseminated to Korea and Japan, where it developed its own distinctive features. Because of its implication of felicity and long life, the crane motif has been extensively applied in the traditional design of the three countries. With the evolution of people’s creative concepts, psychological aspirations, and aesthetic preferences, the crane motif has also been diversified and refined, and it remains widely utilized in contemporary times. This article takes the Korean-Chinese-Japanese culture as the backdrop, and takes the origin of the Korean-Chinese-Japanese crane motif and the features of the Korean-Chinese-Japanese crane motif in different historical eras as the starting point, to probe into the process and numerous symbolic significances of the evolution of the Korean-Chinese-Japanese crane motif, as well as the cultural implications of the Chinese and Japanese crane motif. It concentrates on analyzing the commonalities and differences of the Korean-Chinese-Japanese crane motif in the application of artistic design practice, drawing on the design elements that are worth emulating, and providing new insights for the inheritance and innovation design of the crane motif.Under the historical background and aesthetic trend of different countries, crane pattern has gradually formed an artistic pattern with national characteristics, showing different cultural characteristics in shape, color, layout and other aspects, and its symbolic meaning is also different. In terms of practical application of crane pattern, the fields involved in the three countries are basically the same, but crane pattern is different in design.
