초록
본 연구의 목적은 우리나라의 건설 기업이 ESG 관리를 위하여 활용하고 있는 양적 지표를 파악하고 그 추세를 파악하는 것이다. 국가 노동 시장과 환경에 중대한 영향을 미치는 주요 산업으로 인식되는 건설업에서 ESG의 적용은 중요하다. 그러나, 높은 사고율과 산업 폐기물 발생량과 같은 건설업이 갖는 특징들로 인하여 건설업에서의 ESG 수행은 상당히 더딘편이다. 게다가, ESG 평가 기준의 다양성은 건설업 내에서 ESG의 채택되는 것을 더욱 더디게 만든다. 본 연구는 지난 10년간 우리나라의 9개 주요 건설회사에서 발간한 ESG 보고서를 분석하여 건설회사에서 주로 사용되는 E, S, G 분야에서 주로 사용되는 양적 지표들을 파악하고, 시계열 분석을 통하여 그 추이를 조사하였다. 이러한 결과는 지난 10년간 우리나라 건설회사들이 어떻게 ESG를 관리하였는지 파악하는데 도움이 될 수 있다. 또한, 이 결과는 중소, 중견 건설기업이 ESG 수행 전략을 수립하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 더불어, 건설 산업의 ESG 측면에 대한 투자 증가를 장려하기 위한 중요한 정보가 될 수 있다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 결과는 다른 산업과 비교했을 때 건설업이 부족한 측면을 식별하고 보충적 지표를 제안하는데 유용할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to identify the quantitative indicators construction companies use for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and toinvestigate their trends. ESG implementation in the construction industry is crucial due to its significant impact on the labor market andenvironment. However, challenges such as high accident rates and substantial industrial waste generation hinder full ESG integration. Thediversity of ESG scores and criteria also slows adoption in the industry. To evaluate the current state of ESG management, this studyreviewed ESG reports from the past 10 years of nine general contractor companies in South Korea, identifying 28 common quantitativeindicators: 10 Environmental, 13 Social, and 5 Governance. Time series analysis revealed an increasing number of companies using theseindicators, with progressive improvements in the values of E, S, and G indicators, reflecting better fulfillment of social responsibilities. These findings can aid ESG management, particularly for small and medium-sized companies lacking resources for ESG implementation. Additionally, by presenting trends over time, this study offers guidance on which indicators should be reinforced for improved ESGperformance in the construction industry.
