트리스탄 이튼의 그라피티를 영감으로 한 헤어아트

초록
글로벌 시대의 예술은 다양성의 수용을 중요시하는 방향으로 발전하고 있으므로 누구나 접할 수 있는 대중적 예술의 중요성도 커지고 있다. 거리예술인 그라피티는 공공장소에서 벽화를 통해 자신을 표현하고 누구나 차별 없이 작품을 경험할 수 있기에 대중성을 갖는다. 이러한 그라피티의 특성을 표현할 수 있는 소재로 헤어를 선정하였는데 헤어는 사람이라면 누구나 접할 수 있다는 점에서 그라피티처럼 대중성을 갖기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 다양성과 대중성을 갖춘 작품을 제작하자는 목적으로 그라피티와 헤어를 매체로 선택하고 벽화예술로 유명한 뉴욕의 예술가 트리스탄 이튼의 그라피티 작품들을 모티브로 선정하였다. 작가의 그라피티 중 무채색 배경에 다양한 유채색 패턴들이 표현된 작품 4점을 선택하여 먼저 아크릴 물감으로 캔버스에 채색한 후 염색된 헤어를 캔버스에 직접 붙이거나 따로 목공 본드를 사용하여 헤어를 건조 시킨 후 오려 붙여서 표현하였다. 결과물은 그라피티를 모티브로 하여 다채로운 색감과 질감을 잘 표현한 헤어아트 작품들이다. 겉보기에는 규모나 표현에 있어서 양극화되어 있다고도 할 수도 있는 그라피티와 헤어아트를 함께 조합함으로 다름을 융합으로 전환한 대중적인 작품을 제작함에 그 의의가 있고 추후 다양한 예술 양식들을 헤어라는 인간적인 소재로 표현한다면 소통과 포용을 장려하는 방향으로 글로벌 시대 예술의 발전에 기여할 수 있으리라 희망한다.
Abstract
Art is evolving to become more inclusive rather than exclusive due to globalization. Hence there is greater need for art to connect people and bring them together. Graffiti is art that originated from marginalized groups expressing themselves through murals in public spaces, allowing everyone to experience graffiti without discrimination. Although much smaller in scale than graffiti, hair is also accessible to all since everyone has hair. Therefore graffiti and hair were selected as artistic media for this project. Graffiti works by New York artist Tristan Eaton were selected as reference. After painting graffiti using acrylic on canvas, colored human hair pieces were glued onto canvas. Resulting hair artworks showcase graffiti designs with diverse colors, patterns and textures. Aim of this research is to encourage future endeavors in merging different artistic media in order to create inclusive new artworks that can contribute to increasing communication and connection among people around the world.
