국내 창작 뮤지컬의 ESG 가치 실현 사례 연구- 뮤지컬 <북극곰 로라>의 사례를 중심으로-

본 연구는 국내 창작 뮤지컬에 나타난 ESG[Environment(환경), Social(사회), Governance(지배구조)] 가치 실현 사례를 뮤지컬 <북극곰 로라>를 중심으로 분석한다. 국내에서 ESG 가치를 실현한 뮤지컬이 드문점, 원작 환경 동화 <북극곰 로라와의 인터뷰>를 각색하여 환경 문제를 적극적으로 부각한 점, 그리고 기후 위기를 주제로 교육적 목적을 지녔다는 점에서 본 연구는 학술적 가치를 갖는다고 할 수 있다. 또한 ESG 가치실현은 공연을 통한 교육의 측면에서 예술교육의 관점으로도 논의될 수 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 2장에서는 ESG의 정의와 구성 요소를 살펴본다. 환경(Environment), 사회(Social), 지배구조(Governance) 측면에서 각각의 의미와 중요성을 논의하고, 예술 분야에서의 적용 방안을 연구하며 ESG 가치 도입의 필요성을 검토할 것이다. 3장에서는 원작 동화 <북극곰 로라와의 인터뷰>와 뮤지컬 <북극곰 로라>에 나타난 작품 특성을 세 가지 관점으로 살펴본다. 원작 동화에서는 첫째, 동물의 의인화를 통해 환경 문제를 어린이의 시선에서 바라보게 한 점, 둘째, 로라와의 인터뷰를 통해 마을 사람들과 북극곰로라 간의 환경 실천에 대한 의견 대립을 부각한 점, 셋째, 로라와의 약속을 통해 지속 가능한 지구촌을 위한약속을 강조한 점이 주요 특성이다. 반면, 동화가 뮤지컬로 각색됨에 따라 변화된 작품 특성은 첫째, 극중 인물 구성의 변주를 통해 다양한 관점에서 환경 문제를 바라보는 점, 둘째, 추리 서사 구조를 도입하여 마을 시장이 탐정으로 변장해 직접 문제를 해결하는 점, 셋째, 관객들의 환경 오염에 대한 행동 변화를 촉구할 수 있도록 ESG 가치를 담은 넘버와 안무를 통해 참여를 유도하는 점이다. 4장에서는 뮤지컬 <북극곰 로라>에 나타난 ESG의 가치 사례를 환경(E), 사회(S), 지배구조(G) 관점으로 논의한다. 첫째, ‘E’는 북극곰 로라의 시선으로 바라본 환경 오염의 원인과 해결책을 다룬 점, 둘째,‘S’는 마을 시장이 탐정으로 변장해 올바른 시민 행동을 이야기한 점, 셋째, ‘G’는 앞서 다룬 문제를 해결하기 위해 에코피아 마을이라는 마을 공동체를 만든 점을그 예로 들 수 있다. 그 결과, ESG 공연이‘지속성’과 실천 지향성 중심의 사고를 촉진한다는 점을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 ESG가 공연예술 분야에 적용될 수 있는 범주를 확인함으로써, 향후 ESG 공연 개념을 확립하는데 기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the realization of ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) values in Korean original musical, focusing on the case of the musical <Laura The Polar Bear>. This study of the musi cal “Laura the Polar Bear” has academic value in that it is one of the few musicals in Korea that real izes ESG values, and it actively highlights environmental issues and has an educational effect. Furthermore, this research discusses the realization of ESG values from the perspective of arts educa tion, particularly education through performance. This study is structured as follows. Chapter 2 examines the definition and components of ESG, dis cussing the meaning and importance of the environment (E), social (S), and governance (G), as well as exploring their applications in the arts and the necessity of introducing ESG values. Chapter 3 ana lyzes the characteristics of the original fairy tale <Interview with Polar Bear Laura> and the musical adaptation <Laura The Polar Bear> from three perspectives. The original fairy tale features: (1) an thropomorphism of animals to present environmental issues through the eyes of children, (2) a narra tive highlighting the conflict between village residents and Laura over environmental practices, and (3) an emphasis on our commitment to a sustainable world through the promise with Laura. The mu sical adaptation, however, introduces distinct features: (1) variations in characters to explore environ mental issues from multiple perspectives, (2) the adoption of a mystery narrative where the village mayor disguises as a detective to resolve issues firsthand, and (3) active audience engagement through musical numbers and choreography embedding ESG values to encourage audience behavior change around environment. Chapter 4 discusses the examples of ESG values manifested in the musical <Laura The Polar Bear> from the perspectives of environment (E), social (S), and governance (G). First, "E" addresses the causes and solutions to environmental pollution as seen through Laura’s eyes. Second, "S" illustrates proper civic behavior through the village mayor's transformation into a detective. Third, "G" emphasizes the creation of a communal village, Ecopia, to solve the addressed issues. Consequently, the study confirms that ESG performances promote thought on "sustainability" and action-oriented thinking. By identifying the extent to which ESG can be applied to the performing arts, this study ultimately aims to contribute to the future conceptualization of ESG performance.
