디아스포라(Diaspora) 다종(Multi-species)의 출현과 역사의 재맥락화 -그레이스 M. 조의 『전쟁 같은 맛』(2023)을 중심으로

This article focuses on analyzing Grace M. Cho's memoir, Taste Like War. The main points of discussion in the paper are as follows. First of all, the narrator is deeply interested in her mother’s experience as an Yanggongju and migration to the United States and the onset of schizophrenia, and understands the two dimensions of her mother anew in the relationship between the entanglement and pollution of individuals and history. In this way, the mother is reborn as a being who has independently practiced a multi-species life, rather than a diseased being concealed from the existing official history. Furthermore, the narrator goes on an academic journey to understand and interpret the two dimensions of her mother, and the trauma of her mother, who is a Yanggongju and suffers from schizophrenia. She goes through the process of being reborn as an inherited being, as an academic subject, as a writer, as a daughter, and as a complex Korean diaspora that forms various academic connections. As a result, the narrator's writing and memoir work are not only a multidisciplinary way of constructing a web of new Korean diasporas that are formed around these outcomes, but also a process of talking about how diasporas are born in a historical place and construct their lives in a complex web of history by resummoning the 'ghosts' of beings represented by the forgotten mothers of history.
