위키피디아 언어판 비교를 통한 디자인 중심 네트워크의 복잡계 특성 분석 -영어판과 한국어판 ‘디자인’ 문서를 중심으로-

This study compares and analyzes the structural characteristics of hypertext networks centered on the “Design” articles in the English and Korean editions of Wikipedia. By applying centrality metrics and the theoretical framework of complex systems, it explores the differences in how knowledge is organized across linguistic and cultural contexts. The analysis employed degree, closeness, and betweenness centrality, with all metrics normalized to a 0–1 range. Based on their means and standard deviations, Z-scores were calculated to interpret category-wise distributional patterns and complex-system attributes. The results show that the English network exhibited dispersed centrality across multiple categories and high correlations among centrality measures, revealing distinct features of complex systems such as self-organization, emergence, and path diversity. In contrast, the Korean network displayed concentrated centrality in specific categories and lower or negative correlations, indicating a hierarchical and cohesion-centered information structure. Notably, the “Design history” category in the English edition and the “Art and aesthetics” category in the Korean edition each showed high levels of both centrality and variance, suggesting that complex-system characteristics were selectively reinforced within certain conceptual domains. These findings demonstrate that, even when addressing the same subject, Wikipedia networks differ in how knowledge is structured and interconnected, reflecting distinct cultural and cognitive patterns. By integrating centrality-based network analysis with a complexity framework, this study presents an empirical approach to understanding linguistic and cultural differences embedded in hypertextual information structures. Future research should extend this approach to additional languages and topics to further advance the complexity-based analysis of information networks.
