일본 검도의 형식미(形式美)의 본질에 관한 연구

초록
본 연구는 형식미(形式美) 차원에서 드러나는 검도의 아름다움의 본질을 고찰하고자 하였다. 검도는 단순한 신체 기술의 집합이 아니라, 인간의 정신과 육체가 조화를 이루며 형식 속에서 도(道)를 구현하는 과정주의 수행적 미학의 장으로 이해될 수 있다. 연구 방법으로는 문헌 분석과 철학적 해석학을 적용하였으며, 검도의 심미적･미학적 현상을 해석학적 관점에서 통합적으로 고찰하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 검도의 형식미는 지정학적 환경, 역사적 경험, 종교･철학적 융합을 포함한 독자적 의식구조와 문화적 토양에서 비롯되었으며, 이는 검도를 인간 형성과 정신 수양의 실천으로 전환시키는 기반이 되었다. 둘째, 검도의 형식미는 과정주의(過程主義)에 기반하며, 절대 삼박(絶對三拍)과 같은 리듬과 조화를 통해 기술･정신･기(氣)의 융합을 실현한다. 이는 단순한 기술 완성을 넘어 수련 자체를 도(道)의 실천으로 승화시키는 원리이다. 셋째, 올바른 자세를 구현하는 가마에(構え)는 신체적 완성과 정신적 합일을 상징하며, 형의 내면화를 통해 자유롭고 자연스러운 기술 수행을 가능하게 한다. 넷째, 검도의 형식미는 예(禮)의 실천과 깊이 맞닿아 있으며, 상대와의 조화와 자기 극복을 통해 내면적 질서와 평정심 형성에 기여한다. 결론적으로, 검도의 형식미는 기술적 완벽성에 머물지 않고, 신체･정신･윤리가 통합된 수행적 미학으로 이해될 수 있다. 본 연구는 이를 형식미와 과정주의의 관점에서 해석함으로써, 기존의 실증 중심 연구에서 충분히 조명되지 못한 검도 수련의 미학적 구조를 규명하였다는 점에서 학문적 의의를 지닌다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the essence of beauty manifested in the formal aesthetics (形式美) of Japanese Kendo. Kendo is not merely a collection of physical techniques, but can be understood as a domain of process-oriented performative aesthetics in which the human mind and body harmonize to realize Do (the Way) through form. Methodologically, this study adopts literature review and philosophical hermeneutics, and examines the aesthetic and philosophical phenomena of Kendo from a hermeneutic perspective in an integrated manner. The findings are as follows. First, the formal beauty of Kendo originates from a distinctive cultural foundation shaped by geopolitical conditions, historical experiences, and the integration of religious and philosophical traditions. This foundation transformed Kendo into a practice of human formation and mental cultivation. Second, the formal aesthetics of Kendo are grounded in a process-oriented philosophy, through which the integration of technique, spirit, and ki (energy) is achieved via rhythmic harmony, exemplified by the concept of the Absolute Three Beats (絶對三拍). This principle elevates practice itself into the realization of Do beyond mere technical mastery. Third, kamae (構え), which embodies correct posture, symbolizes the unity of body and mind, enabling the free and natural execution of techniques through the internalization of form. Fourth, the formal aesthetics of Kendo are closely related to the practice of rei (禮), contributing to the formation of inner order and equanimity through harmony with others and self-discipline. In conclusion, the formal aesthetics of Kendo are not confined to technical perfection, but can be understood as a performative aesthetic in which body, mind, and ethics are integrated. This study, by interpreting Kendo from the perspectives of formal aesthetics and process-oriented philosophy, reveals the aesthetic structure of Kendo practice that has not been sufficiently addressed in existing empirically oriented research, thereby demonstrating its academic contribution.
