The Characteristics of Annual Base Salary in Japan

This study is focused to analyze and define the characteristics of annual base salary in Japan and the U.S.A. The differences of the following employment systems are giving much influences to Japanese annual base salary. (1) In Japan internal labor markets have been developed, but in the U.S.A external labor markets have been developed. (2) In the U.S.A. each people choose his career by himself and develop it, but in Japan career tend to be chosen and developed by not individual character but company needs. (3) Japanese evaluation system is based on the whole personality evaluation in which even potential abilities are evaluated. But American evaluation system depends on the quantitative evaluation. Because they have chosen Management By Objectives. (4) If we say American employment system is like Investment Trust which has high risk and high return, Japanese employment system is like Installment deposit which has low risk and low return. Considering the above traditional employment system, I think Japanese Company will introduce the Mixed annual base salary which has middle risk and middle return. Trying to keep their merits in Japans' Ability & Qualification system, Japanese Company will accept the advantages of the annual base salary
