The strategic group is a useful concept to depict the competitive landscape of intra-industry dynamics. It can succinctly describe the similarity of strategic behaviors of firms in the same strategic group. Recent researches suggested cognitive dimensions be very important criteria to classify strategic groups. The cognitive strategic group can be extended and applied to explain the similarity of foreign direct investment decisions, especially of small and medium sized firms. Foreign direct investment is one of strategic decisions. The firms which have the similar cognitive model, or response mechanism will show the similar investment pattern. We found empirical evidence supporting our argument. Four strategic groups was classified by the criteria of the cognitive attributes, and imitative investment patterns was observed in terms of investment timing and location.
