초록
In the genesis of strategic management, early focus was upon inanimate variables(strategy/structure relationships or strategic typology), and more recently, a focus which shifted towards the more animate problems, upon the impact of the dominant coalition within Top Management Team(TMT). The characteristics of the TMT could well provide more useful indicators of corporate competitive performance than those of CEO. prior researches focused on TMT composition have some problems as follows. First, prior researchers did not considered variables such as CEO power in TMT although it is one of the most influential variables of TMT research. Second, TMT's composition could be characterized in terms of the quantity of a compositional characteristics as well as the dispersion of demographic characteristics within TMT. So, not only TMT average characteristics but also TMT heterogeneity should be focused in research. This study focused on problems presented above and collected archival data pertaining to 1,231 managers' demographic characteristics and financial outcomes from 81 companies of 7 industries. The results were summarized as follows. ⑴ There were partially differences in TMT composition by environmental uncertainty. The higher environmental complexity, the higher TMT heterogeneity and the lower CEO dominance. This result was consistent with prior studies. But surprisingly, the relation between environmental munificence and TMT composition was similar above. perhaps, organizational slack might make TMT tolerate diversity of view by diminishing competition among top members. ⑵Though some fitness between type of environmental uncertainty and TMT composition were suggested, the relations were very confused and complex. So, additional analysis will have to be executed on the basis of industry type.
