This analysis examines the effectiveness of employee participation programs and group-based incentives in improving firm performance. Data from a sample of 250 manufacturing firms with more than 300 employees which the Korea Labor Institute surveyed in August through September in 1999 were used, and analyses showed the following results. First, we find that union-management joint committee, although not significantly, positively affects labor productivity, but other employee participation programs such as work teams, QC circles, and employee representation on board negatively, or do not affect labor productivity. Surprisingly, work teams significantly have negative effect on labor productivity. Second, we find that group-based incentives positively affect significant labor productivity. Finally, we discuss the implications and limits of these findings.
