기업집단 본부의 통제가 계열사 연구개발투자에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

>본 연구는 기업수준 전략경영과 사업부의 전략적 행동간의 관계의 중요성을 인식하고, 한국기업집단의 본부통제가 계열사의 연구개발투자에 미치는 영향에 대하여 실증적 연구를 실시하였다. 본 연구는 한국기업에 대한 실증적 증거자료를 제공하며 기존 연구들의 한계를 제한적이나마 극복하여 학문적 이해의 진전을 도모하고자 하였다. 우선, 기업통제와 사업부의 전략적 행동(특히, 위험감수 활동)간의 관계에 관심을 둔 기존 연구들을 검토하고 기존연구들에서 드러난 몇몇 한계점들을 지적한 다음, 그 한계점들을 극복할 수 있는 방향으로 본 연구의 실증연구 계획이 수립되었다. Williamson(1975, 1985)과 Hill(1988)이 파악한 기업통제의 제 차원들 즉, 재무적 통제, 운영적 통제, 그리고 전략적 통제 차원들이 계열사 연구개발투자간의 관계를 검증하였다. 대리인이론, 전략경영이론, 조직행동이론 등을 바탕으로 이론적 연결을 제안하였다. 제안된 연구가설들은 57개 계열사들로부터 수집된 1차 자료와 기 발간된 2차 자료를 모두 사용하여 검증이 실시되었다. 연구결과, 운영적 통제에 의존하는 정도가 계열사 연구개발투자 강도와 부(-)적인 관계를 가지는 것으로 발견되었다. 하지만, 기존 연구들의 결과와는 대조적으로 재무적 통제와 전략적 통제는 계열사 연구개발투자와 유의한 관계를 가지지 못하였다. 이에 본 연구는 추가분석을 통하여 본 연구의 발견에 대한 논리적인 해석과 추론을 시도하였다. 끝으로, 본 연구의 한계점들이 지적되었고 미래 연구들의 방향이 제시되었다.
Abstract
Recognizing the importance of the relationship between corporate-level strategic management and division's strategic behaviors, this research performed an empirical study on the effects of group control on research and development (R&D) investment of firms affiliated to Korean business groups. This study provides an empirical evidence of Korean business companies and with that, tries to make an advance of the understanding of corporate control and R&D and overcome the limitations of the prior studies. First, this study reviewed the previous researches on the relationship between corporate control and division's strategic behaviors (especially, risk-taking behavior) and indicated limitations of the past understanding efforts. This research designed an empirical study to overcome the limitations. R&D investment efforts were tested in terms of the relationship with major corporate control dimensions identified by Williamson (1975, 1985) and Hill (1988)：financial control, operational control, and strategic control. Theoretical linkages were suggested on the basis of agency theory, strategic management theory, and organizational behavior theory. Suggested research hypotheses were tested with primary data and secondary data of 57 affiliated firms. The results show that the degree of the emphasis on operational control is negatively related to R&D investment intensity. However, inconsistent with the findings of prior studies, financial control and strategic control were not significantly related to R&D investment intensity. Further analysis was performed and logical conjecture was provided. Finally, theoretical and practical implications of this study were discussed, the limitations were indicated, and some directions of future research were suggested.
