초록
본고는 오토 노이랏(Otto Neurath)의 논리적 실증주의의 관점을 통해 정보디자인교육이 지향해야 할 방향을 재고(再考)하는데 그 목적이 있다. “정보가 단일화된 의미로 재현함” 그리고 “정보가 단일화된 의미로 해석됨”은 그가 달성하려고 했던 궁극적 목표였다. 이를 위해 그가 이룩한 논리적 해결방법으로서의 철학적 모색과 언어학적 시스템 도입은 현대까지도 정보디자인의 근간(根幹)을 이룬다. 고도의 테크놀러지가 가져다 준 정보전달 시스템의 비약적인 발전에도 불구하고 그의 연구가 정보디자이너들에게 이론적 틀을 제공하는 이유는 당대 철학적 배경(실증주의, 합리론, 논리학, 언어학 등)을 근거로 의미전달체계의 다양한 분석과 새로운 가능성을 실험하였고, 아이소타입(ISOTYPE)이라는 시각언어를 개발, 정보전달의 합리화, 정보의 일반화를 이룩했기 때문이다. 본고는 그의 이론과 연구성과를 토대로 정보디자인 교육에 있어서 고려해야할 근본적인 문제가 수용자가 정보를 습득하고 이해하는 구조, 즉 정보와의 상호작용이며, 그것은 전적으로 경험에 입각한 시각적 요소의 물리적 관계의 분석에 의해 획득되는 것이라고 보고, 이에 대한 사례들과 정보디자인교육에서 필요한 기본적 접근방법에 대해 재고(再考)하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to reconsider a proper direction that the education of information design should aim for in terms of logical positivism studied by Otto Neurath. Communicating with information represented and interpreted as a single meaning was the ultimate goal of his study. Neurath's philosophical research as a logical way and introduction to linguistic system have been a basic fundamental in information design field until these days. In spite of a notable progress of the information conveying system by high technology, the reason why his study provides a theoric basis for information designers is that he experimented with various analysis and the new possibilities about the system. He also developed a visual languages called ISOTYPE, and accomplished rationalization of conveying information. In this study, I reconsider the way to approach to the education of information design with examples. In Neurath's theory and research, the most essential problem is the structure between information and receivers, who are supposed to understand it. That can be gained by analysis of the physical relationship with visual elements based on experiences.
