기업의 기술혁신성과 결정요인: 기업규모와 외부 네트워크의 역할을 중심으로

본 논문은 과학기술정책연구원이 조사한 KIS(Korean Innovation Survey) 2002를 활용하여, 기업 차원에서 기술혁신성과의 결정요인을 분석한다. 특히, 기업규모와 외부 네트워크의 역할에 대한 계량적 효과에 초점을 맞추었다. 기술혁신활동의 성과를 제품혁신과 공정혁신으로 구분하였으며, 기술혁신성과의 결정요인으로서는 기업규모와 외부 네트워크 이외에도 이윤율, 수출비율, 해외지분, 기업연령, 시장집중도, R&D활동 착수여부, 그리고 산업별 R&D집약도 등이 고려되었다. 분석된 표본은 제조업에 속한 1,128개 기업으로 정성적 분석방법인 로지스틱 회귀모형(logistic regression)을 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 외부기관 혹은 타기업과의 네트워크는 혁신유형에 관계없이 기술혁신성과에 정(+)의 유의한 효과를 나타내어 혁신활동에서 기업간 협력의 중요성을 확인해 주었다. 또한, 혁신유형에 따라 기술혁신성과의 결정요인이 다르게 분석되었다. 즉, 기업규모와 기술혁신성과 간의 정(+)의 관계는 공정혁신인 경우에만 성립하였고, 해외지분과 이윤율도 공정혁신의 경우에만 정(+)의 유의한 효과를 나타낸 반면에, R&D착수여부, 산업별 R&D집약도 등은 제품혁신에 대해서만 정(+)의 효과를 보여주었다. 그러나 수출비율과 기업연령은 기술혁신성과와 통계적으로 의미 있는 관계를 보이지 않았다. 기업규모별로 표본을 달리하여 추정한 결과, 종업원 100명 미만의 소규모기업과 100명 이상의 중견 및 대기업 간에도 기술혁신성과의 결정요인이 다르게 나타났으며, 종업원 100명 이상의 기업들을 주 분석대상으로 하는 기존의 연구결과들이 표본상의 편의(bias)를 가질 수 있음을 지적하였다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the determinants of firm's innovative performance, using Korean Innovation(KIS) dataset. Especially, I examined the role of external networks and firm size in performing innovative activities. Product innovation and process innovation are used as proxies for innovative performance. The independent variables such as lagged profit rate, foreign equity ratio, export ratio, firm's age, market concentration ratio, R&D activity and industrial R&D intensity are yet other considerations. With two year-long(2000-2001) data from 1,128 Korean manufacturing firms, I estimated the logistic regression model. Empirical findings confirm that external networks have a strong positive effect on innovative output, regardless both type of innovation and sample by firm size. The Schumpeterian hypothesis between firm size and innovative activity is accepted just for process innovation. While foreign equity ratio and lagged profit rate have a positive effect on process innovation, R&D activity and industrial R&D intensity have a positive effect on product innovation. However, the hypotheses concerning both export ratio and firm's age are rejected. Lastly, I found that some existing studies based on medium and large firms, which have over 100 employees, may have a statistical bias.
