초록
Otoo(1999), Ludvigson and Steindel(1999), Fisher and Statman(2000) 그리고 Fisher and Statman(2003) 등에 의해 서서히 진행되었던 소비심리지수 및 투자자 심리지수 등의 심리변수와 주식수익률간의 연구는 그 동안 국내 학회에서는 별로 주목받지 못했다. 본 논문은 최근에 발표된 Fisher and Statman(2003)의 논의 전개에 따라 국내 data를 활용해서 실증분석을 실행해 본 것이다. 분석결과에 따르면 동시적인(contemporaneous) 경우 소비심리개선이 전체 주식수익률 및 소매업종 지수수익률 등에 통계적으로 유의한 (+)효과를 보여서 그들의 결과와 동일한 결과가 산출되었다. 이는 소비심리개선이 실제로 소비로 이어질 가능성이 높고, 이런 소비증대로 인해 해당 업종의 실적이 개선되어 주가도 상승세를 나타내게 되는 것으로 판단된다. 또한, 전체 주식 수익률 및 각 개별 소비업종 지수 수익률이 소비심리 개선에 1%의 통계적으로 유의한 (+)효과를 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 즉, 주식시장이 활황장세를 보이게 되면 투자자들의 수익이 제고되어 각 개별 가계의 현금흐름이 개선이 되고, 이에 따라 전반적인 소비심리도 개선되는 경로효과를 보인다는 것이다. 이는 Fisher and Statman(2003)의 연구결과와도 일치하는 동일한 결과이다.
Abstract
There are several serious research papers such as Otoo(1999), Ludvigson and Steindel (1999), Fisher and Statman(2000) and Fisher and Statman(2003) in the area of the linkage between consumer confidence and stock returns. This paper examines whether the consumer confidence and the investor sentiment predict the stock market in a way using Fisher and Statman(2003) model for the Korean market. It is found that there is a statistically significant positive relationship between the consumer confidence and the stock returns at contemporaneous horizon. There are, however, negative relationship in next 6 and 12 months horizon in the sub-index of MSCI classification. The overall finding results are in line with Fisher and Statman(2003). It is desirable to check the impacts of investor sentiment, broken down by institutional investors and individual investors, on the stock returns. Notice that Fisher and Statman(2003) finds no consistent results between the AAII Investor sentiment and Wall Street Strategist’s sentiment.
