신제품개발 프로젝트의 R&D와 타기능간의 통합화 수준에 관한 실증 연구

신제품 개발 프로젝트의 성공이란 일반적으로 보다 빨리 그리고 완벽하게 상품화되어 시장에 출시되고 재무적인 이득이 발생됨을 의미한다. 이러한 상품화의 성공까지는 많은 단계를 거치며 각 단계별로 요구되는 기능간의 통합화 수준은 서로 다르다. 본 연구는 각 단계별로 요구되는 통합화 수준의 변화를 살펴보고, 요구되는 통합화 수준에 영향을 미치는 변수를 찾아내며, 실제로 달성된 통합화의 적절성이 프로젝트의 기술적, 재무적 성공에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이다. 연구 대상은 ‘91년부터 ’98년까지 장영실상을 수상한 신제품 개발 프로젝트이다. 분석 결과 R&D-생산 통합화는 공정 개발 단계에서 가장 많이 요구되며, R&D-마케팅 통합화는 상품화 단계에서 가장 많이 요구되고 있다. 통합화 수준은 프로젝트 핵심기술의 성격, 개발 형태, 신제품 시장의 신규성, 시장의 경쟁 상태, 기술의 속도 그리고 기술의 난이도에서 유의한 차이를 보이고 있다. 통합화의 적절성이 성과 변수에 미치는 영향을 보면 R&D-생산간의 통합화가 잘 이루어질수록 안정화 기간은 상대적으로 단축된다. R&D-마케팅간의 통합화가 잘 이루어질수록 진행 기간의 전체적 효율이 올라간다. 기능간 통합화의 적절성과 재무적 성과와는 통계적으로 유의한 관계를 보이지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 개별 프로젝트를 대상으로 분석하였기 때문에 각 기능간 통합화의 적절성과 성과의 관계를 밝히지 못하는 한계를 갖는다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 향후에는 전 프로젝트에서 이루어지는 각 기능간 통합화를 연구하기 위해 연구실을 분석 단위로 하여 각 기능간 통합화 연구를 보다 확장 및 발전시킬 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
New product development(NPD) projects have several stages. Individual stages require different level of cross functional integration or functional cooporation. This study examines two relationships: first, relationship between required level of the integration, and project characteristics and environment uncertainty; second, relationship between appropriateness of actual integration and technical and financial success of NPD projects. It is found that R&D-Manufacturing integration is required mostly at the stage of process development, and R&D-Marketing integration is required mostly at the stage of commercial preparation. Factors that affect required level of integration are key technology, organizational structure, product newness in the market, market competitiveness, and speed and sophistication of the applied technology. It is also found that R&D- Manufacturing integration shortens commercialization period and appropriateness of R&D-Marketing integration increases possibility of technical success. However, it is not found that there are any relationships between the appropriateness and financial success.
