7.1 연구결과의 요약 본 논문은 다각화된 기업의 본사와 계열사 간 분권화의 문제를 다루고 있다. 기존 연구는 기업본사의 입장을 취하는가 혹은 계열사의 입장을 취하는가에 따라 분권화에 대하여 상충된 처방을 제공하고 있다. 기업본사의 입장을 취하는 연구에서는 다각화전략에 따라 기업본사와 계열사간 분권화 수준이 결정되어야 한다고 주장하고 있는 반면, 계열사의 입장을 취하는 연구에서는 각 계열사의 전략적 특성에 따라 분권화의 수준이 차별화 되어야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 기업수준의 연구와 계열사 수준의 연구를 동시에 고려함으로써 이와 같은 상충된 견해를 통합할 수 있는 논리를 제시하고 실증분석을 통해 통합된 이론의 타당성을 입증하고 있다. 가설 검정 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 다각화전략의 유형에 따라 기업본사와 계열사간의 분권화 수준이 결정된다는 기업본사 입장의 논리는 계열사가 차별화전략을 취하고 자원보유 수준이 높은 경우와 계열사가 저원가전략을 취하고 자원보유 수준이 낮은 경우에 한하여 적용될 수 있다. 둘째, 계열사들이 취하고 있는 경쟁전략에 따라 기업본사와 계열사간의 분권화 수준이 결정된다는 사업부 수준의 논리는 기업이 비관련 다각화 전략을 취하고 계열사의 자원보유 수준이 높은 경우와 기업이 관련다각화 전략을 취하고 계열사의 자원보유 수준이 낮은 경우에 한정된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문은 분권화와 관련하여 어떠한 경우에 기업본사의 논리가 적용되고 어떠한 경우에 계열사의 논리가 우위를 갖는가에 대한 이론을 제시하고 이를 실증분석을 통해 입증하였다는 데서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
This study explores conditions for differentiated decentralization and homogenized decentralization between the corporate headquarters and subsidiaries in the diversified firm. Most studies of decentralization in diversified firms can be dichotomized into either a corporate level study or a business level study. However, prescriptions provided by these two different research streams have been different from each other and sometimes paradoxical. In the corporate-level research, it is argued that decentralization between the corporate HQ and subsidiaries is dependent on which diversification types are pursued at the corporate level and thus homogeneous among subsidiaries. In contrast, researchers interested in subsidiaries within diversified firms posited that decentralization between the corporate HQ and subsidiaries should consider environmental or strategic contexts at the business level and thus be differentiated accordingly. This paper is to resolve these paradoxical prescriptions and to provide conditions for when each argument is applicable. It was found that the corporate-level's diversification strategy dominates in determining the degree of decentralization either when subsidiaries with high resource level are pursuing differentiation strategy or when subsidiaries with low resource level are pursuing cost leadership strategy.
