다이몬과 에토스 - 비극적 주인공으로서의 드미트리 카라마조프

쟝-피에르 베르낭(Jean-Piere Vernant)에 따르면, 고대 그리스 비극에서 주인공들의 행위와 결정은 한편으로는, 개인의 기질과 성향들의 총합인 에토스에, 다른 한이몬(da mn)에 뿌리내리고 있으며, 이 두 가지 힘의 동시적 공존, 그리고 그로 인한 항상적 긴장이 바로 비극적 행위의 본질을 형성한다. 도스토예프스키의 마지막 장편 소설 『카라마조프가의 형제들』에서 드미트리가 행하는 일련의 결정적 행위들에 대한 상세한 분석은 그의 행위가 에토스적 관점에서 설명될 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 다이몬의 강력한 영향력 아래에 동시에 놓여 있음을 보여준다. 비록 전혀 상이한 사회적, 심리적, 『카라마조프가의 형제들』에 관한 우리의 분석은, 인간 행위의 본질에 관한 한, 도스토예프스키의 생각이 아이스퀼로스의 그것과 크게 다르지 않음을 보여준다. 그리스 비극 작묘사하고 있었다면, 19세기 후반 러시아의 도스토예프스키는 합리주의적 세계관이 그 절정에 달한 서구 사회에서 완전히 자취를 감춰버리려 하는 고대 신화적 인간 이해를 복원시키고자 시도하고 있다고 할 것이다.
Abstract
This esay aims at establishing the esential links betwen the ancient Grek tragedy and Dostoevsky's last great novel, The Brothers Karamazov. For this purpose I, first, discus the problems of human fre w il and divine necessity, and, in a more fundamental sense, the problems of hu man action and choice in Grek tragedy on the basis of recent studies on t his topic. Then, I proceed to examine how these essential characteristics of Greek tragedy might be aplied to the case of Dmitri Karamazov. Accor ding to Jean-Piere Vernant, Grek tragedians, most representatively Ae schylus among them, consider a human being as an agent equiped with a certain degre of a power of reason and rational judgment, yet not comp letely fre from the supernatural power of a divine being. The esence of a tragic hero is found in the constant tension between da mn(divine power) and thos(character). Our analysis shows that, although the Greek tr agedians and Dostoevsky worked under entirely diferent social, psycholo gical and linguistic conditions, as far as the essential nature of human action is concerned, t h e i d e a o f D o s t o e v s k y i s n o t f a r r e m o v e d f r o m t h a t of
