정보기술의 확산 및 조직요인과의 상관관계 연구는 혁신확산 이론을 근간으로 하여 오랜 기간 MIS 연구의 한 주류를 이룬 다소 진부한 주제이지만 아직 명확한 결론은 없으며 연구가 진행된 맥락에 따라 엇갈린 결론을 내리고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 상반된 연구결과에 대한 부분적인 설명을 구하기 위해 정보기술 확산 성숙도의 상대성이라는 개념을 도입한다. 정보기술의 상대적 확산성숙도는 특정 조직이 도입한 정보기술의 포트폴리오 중에서 해당조직이 상대적으로 더 중요시하는 개별 정보기술에 더 높은 가중치를 두고, 전체 정보기술 확산단계의 가중 평균치를 구하는 개념이다. 조직이 처한 상황에 따라 개별 정보기술의 상대적 중요성은 조직마다 다를 것이므로 이러한 성숙도의 상대성 개념은 타당성이 있을 것으로 판단된다. 설문 조사를 통한 실증 연구 결과, 확산 평가의 기준을 어떻게 보느냐에 따라서 영향요인이 다르게 나타났다. 조직규모는 정보기술의 절대적 확산에 긍정적 영향을 주지만 상대적 확산에는 영향을 주지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 규모가 작은 조직도 상대성 관점에서는 나름대로 정보자원을 전략적으로 잘 활용하고 있음을 시사한다. 반면 조직의 전략유형 및 외부환경 요인은 절대적 확산에는 영향을 주지 않지만 상대적 확산에는 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 전략유형 및 외부환경 요인이 정보기술의 단순한 절대적 확산에는 영향을 주지 않지만, 상대성 관점에서 정보기술의 전략적 활용에는 영향을 주는 것으로 나타나 조직이 나름대로 한정된 정보 자원을 조직상황에 맞게 전략적으로 잘 활용하고 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과가 그동안 다양한 선행연구 결과들 간의 갭을 일부 설명해 줄 것으로 기대한다. 또한 본 연구의 결과는 특정 조직의 정보기술을 평가할 때, 평가의 목적에 따라 이전의 단순하고 획일적인 절대 평가보다는 조직 상황에 맞게 맞춤화된 상대 평가의 필요성을 실증적으로 보여주고 있다.
Abstract
This paper addresses the impact of the affecting factors on the innovation-adoption diffusion process of information technology(IT). In the innovation diffusion literature, there are mixed conclusions about affecting factors on innovation diffusion. To explain the reasons for mixed results in the innovation diffusion literature, I introduce a new concept of each IT's relative diffusion level as compared to the usual absolute diffusion level. For each organization's IT portfolio, the relative IT diffusion level of each organization is derived by weighted-average of each IT's diffusion level, in which the weight of each IT is the perceived relative importance of each IT in the specific organization. Empirical study showed that the relative diffusion level is more sensitively affected by organizational factors than the usual absolute diffusion level, which strongly implies that organizations are behaving strategically and rationally with limited IT resources. I hope this results provide some explanations for the mixed conclusions about affecting factors on IT diffusion in the related literature.
