Global Integration of Industry Returns in the Korean Stock Market

본 연구는 MSCI(Morgan Stanley Capital International)의 업종구분법에 따른 한국의 업종지수와 세계의 업종지수를 이용하여 한국주식의 업종별 글로벌화에 대하여 연구하였다. 인플레이션, 유가, 산업생산, 이자율기간구조, 신용위험, 명목실효환율, 단기금리, 장기금리 등 거시경제변수들의 예상치 못한 변화(innovation)를 설명변수로 포함하여 업종별 거시경제변수들의 영향력 차이도 비교분석하였다. 분석결과에 따르면 23개 업종 중 19개 업종에서 글로벌업종지수의 설명력이 매우 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 11개 업종에서는 KOSPI지수보다 글로벌업종지수에 대하여 더욱 민감하게 반응하는 것으로 나타났다. 외환위기이후의 기간에 대한 분석에서는 그 설명력이 더욱 증가하여, 13개의 업종에서 시장초과수익률보다 글로벌업종수익률이 높은 설명력을 가졌으며, 17개 업종에서는 KOSPI지수보다 글로벌업종지수에 대해 더욱 민감하게 반응하는 것으로 나타났다. 거시경제요소들의 영향력에는 업종별로 차이가 있으며 그 설명력은 한계적(marginal)이었다. 본 연구의 결과는 산업간 포트폴리오의 구성과 글로벌자산투자에 있어서 중요한 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the degree of global integration of industry stock returns, using a database complied by the Morgan Stanley Capital International. This study also attempts to uncover and compare the macroeconomic determinants of the industry returns in the Korean Stock Market. The returns on the world equity market portfolio and innovations in the following pre-specified set of macro variables (inflation, oil, industry production, term-structure, credit risk, exchange rate, interest rates, etc.) are employed in the analysis. The most important finding of this study is that the effects of world industry stock returns on the Korean industry stock returns are highly significant in 19 out of 23 industries. The effects of world industry stock returns have further increased after the foreign exchange crisis (for the period of January 2000-December 2006). The coefficient of determination of world industry stock returns (WRi) is higher than that of market returns (MKT) in 13 industries, while the world industry beta is higher than the market beta in 17 industries. Meanwhile, the impacts of macroeconomic news on industry return are varied in industries.
