Knowledge transfer has been recently cited as an important factor for the success of IS projects, where outside consultants bring professional knowledge (industry best practices) into organizations. Knowledge transfer consists of three distinct processes: knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing and knowledge use. Most of empirical studies related to the knowledge transfer have treated the knowledge transfer as these processes but the measurement in their research has included only parts of the three processes. The purpose of this research is to provide a more concrete definition of the knowledge transfer and a related measuring instrument. We have conducted a survey and collected data from 161 IS project teams. Data were analyzed to test the seven hypotheses by LISREL 8.50. The results of this study show that the knowledge transfer (second order factor) consists of three first－order dimensions, namely knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing, and knowledge use. In addition we have found that there exists a causal relationship among the three first－order dimensions. This research provides researchers with several implications. First, we have identified 3 dimensions of the knowledge transfer and developed measurements of these knowledge transfer dimensions. Second, we have built a research model for the relationship between knowledge transfer processes and IS project performance. Third, we have found that the project complexity serves as a moderating factor between knowledge transfer and project performance.
