개인의견, 정보원 의존, 심리적 속성이 여론지각의 정확성에 미치는 영향: 다원적 무지 논의를 중심으로
Effects of individual's opinion, media reliance and personal traits on accuracy of perceptions of majority beliefs

이 연구는 다원적 무지(pluralistic ignorance)현상에 대한 논의를 중심으로 개인의견, 정보원 의존, 그리고 심리적 속성이 여론지각의 정확성에 미치는 영향과 그 과정을 검증했다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위하여 성격이 다른 두 서베이 데이터를 사용했다. 첫 번째 서베이 데이터는 무작위로 추출한 미국성인을 대상으로 전화서베이를 통해서 얻어졌다(n=576). 두 번째 데이터는 국내 대학생을 대상으로 수업시간중의 집단 서베이를 통해서 얻어졌다(n=393). 연구결과를 정리해 보면, 첫째, 개인이 지니는 자기 의견이 강할수록 여론을 그릇되게 지각할 가능성 즉, 다원적 무지가 나타날 가능성이 컸다. 둘째, 미국 성인들과 한국 대학생들 모두 정보 획득을 위해 방송미디어에 많이 의존할수록 여론을 정확하게 지각했다. 그러나 인쇄미디어 의존과 여론지각의 정확성의 관계는 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았다. 셋째, 대인 커뮤니케이션을 많이 할수록 다원적 무지가 강하게 나타났다. 넷째, 심리적 속성과 인터넷 의존은 직접적이지는 않지만 간접적으로 여론지각의 정확성에 영향을 미쳤다. 이 연구의 의의는 여론 지각에 영향을 미치는 개인의견의 강도와 정보원의 중요성을 재확인했으며 선행변인으로서의 심리적 속성의 역할을 경험적으로 검증했다는 점에서 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
The belief that there is an opinion about a particular social issue shared by most others is called a majority belief. Some communication scholars believe that public opinion is a reflection of majority beliefs. This study aims to answer why some people hold different majority beliefs from most others, that is why "pluralistic ignorance" occurs. Assuming an individual opinion, media (or information source) reliance, and personality traits are closely related with pluralistic ignorance, we empirically examine effects of three variables on accuracy of perceptions of majority beliefs. We analyze two sets of data (a random sample of American adults: n=577 & a voluntary sample of Korean students: n=393). Structural equation model based analysis shows that strength of individual's opinion and reliance on information obtained from interpersonal communication are positively related with pluralistic ignorance (i.e., inaccuracy of perceptions of majority beliefs). In addition, personality traits indirectly influence the perceptions of majority beliefs.
