재벌체제와 기업의 사회적 책임

Recently, the concept of corporate social responsibility(CSR) takes a growing interest in academic and business world. Moreover many NGOs make an effort to institute codes of conduct or guidelines on CSR, and call companies' attention to observe it. Also in financial markets, we see the spread of socially responsible investment(SRI); investment practices to the companies which make an attempt to meet their social responsibilities. Notwithstanding highly concerns, the definitions, arguments and practical purposes of CSR have many spectrums according to the involving organizations. This study asserts that a management for shareholder value maximization fundamentally has no relation to the concept of CSR. Therefore the CSR management should be started from the stakeholder firm model and the concept of stakeholder management. The second argument of this article is focusing on trends of CSR in large companies belong to Korean Chaebols. In this argument, we conclude that the so-called CSR managements of many affiliated companies are essentially not for stakeholders but for dominant shareholders named 'family commander'. Lastly, we inquire into the social compromise as a condition for implementation of CSR, and suggest some preconditions to raise CSR activities of Korean Chaebol firms.
