의료영상소프트웨어 아이콘디자인의 기호학적 분석

초록
본 논문은 치과전용 영상소프트웨어 Ondemand 3D TM(Cybermed, Seoul, Korea)의 GUI에서 사용되고 있는 총 55개 아이콘들을 퍼스의 기호학적 분석을 통해 의미를 명확하게 전달하는 기호체계에 대한 논리적인 규명을 하는데 연구의 목적을 두었다. 그 결과 시각기호는 내용이 기호의 표현을 결정하며, 아이콘 디자인은 단순히 형태를 묘사하는 것이 아닌 실제기능의 재현을 가진 명확한 관계를 정립 또는 연상시키는 의미를 디자인해야하며, 그러한 아이콘은 의미가 담긴 텍스트로서 존재하게 된다. 또한 사용자가 기호를 해석하고 이해하는 것은 정신적인 개념으로 사용자의 과거의 경험과 밀접한 연관이 있다고 보았다. 사용자가 컴퓨터소프트웨어와 시스템의 이전경험으로 형성된 복합적 지식체계인 스키마지식은 아이콘을 개발할 때는 누구의 관점에서 개발해야하는지와 사용자의 태스크와 요구사항, 경험, 능력의 한계에 대한 사전지식과 이해가 바탕이 되어야 한다. 이를 위해서 개발자는 사용자의 심성모형을 이해해야하고, 사용자가 오랫동안 사용해왔던 아이콘의 형태와 비슷한 아이콘이 기능의 의미를 유추해내는데 많은 도움을 준다. 그러한 사용자의 선험지식을 반영한 설계로는 메타포와 일관성을 유지할 수 있는 표준화를 들 수 있다. 아이콘의 국제 표준은 ISO라는 용어를 사용하며 이를 담당하는 기구는 국제표준화기구이다. 표준화된 아이콘디자인은 개발자에게는 이전 소프트웨어에서 다른 소프트웨어로 옮겨갈 때 노하우를 그대로 적용할 수 있으며, 사용자에게는 하나의 소프트웨어의 사용에 익숙해지면 다른 소프트웨어에서 사용하는 기본적인 아이콘들의 기능을 학습하지 않고도 사용할 수 있다는 장점을 제공해줄 것이다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the logical examination of the total of 55 icons used in GUI of Medical Imaging Software for dentals, Ondemand 3D TM(Cybermed, Seoul, Korea), into the sign system which delivers the meaning definitely with Peirce's semiotic analysis. As the results of that, I found out the followings: Visual sign has the meaning which determines the expression of sign; Icon design does not simply describe the form, but builds up the clear relations with representation of actual function or designs the associating meaning; Such icons exist as the text with the meaning. Interpreting and understanding signs by users are closely concerned with the past experience of users as the mental concept. When developing icons, the knowledge of Schema, which is compositive knowledge system from the previous experience of system and computer software formed by users, has to depend on the point of view of developing icons, users's task, requirement, experience, information about the limit to ability, and comprehension. For the purpose of this, developers have to understand the users' mental models, and the similar icons with the ones used for a long time is useful for inferring the meaning of function. The design reflected on the transcendental knowledge of users is metaphor and standardization maintaining consistency. The international standards of icon is used for ISO, and its organization is International Standardization Organization. The advantages of Icon design standardized provide the application to know-how for transferring the previous software to the different one for developers, and allow the users to employ the function of basic icons for another software without learning if users are accustomed to the usage for one software.
