이 연구는 낙인이론을 검증함에 있어 부모, 선생, 친구 등 주위 사람들의 비공식낙인의 비행에 대한 영향력을 살펴보려고 한다. 더불어 이 연구는 비행에 대한 통합모델을 구성하여, 첫째, 사회유대 변인과 비행친구와의 접촉이 비공식낙인에 영향을 주는지, 둘째, 사회유대변인과, 비행친구와의 접촉, 그리고 부정적 자아는 비공식낙인의 비행에의 영향을 매개하는지, 셋째, 이전의 과거비행은 비공식낙인을 통해 이후 비행에 영향을 주는지를 살펴보려고 한다. 이 연구는 중학생 2학년대상 청소년패널자료를 이용하여 다양한 가설을 검증한다. 연구결과에 따르면 과거비행, 부모유대, 학업성적, 비행친구와의 접촉이 비공식낙인을 잘 설명하며, 이 변인들의 비행에의 영향이 비공식낙인을 통해 매개되는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 비공식낙인의 비행에의 영향도 학업성적, 비행친구와의 접촉, 그리고 부정적 자아에 의해 매개된다는 결과를 제시했다. 이 결과는 또한 과거비행의 이후 비행에의 영향이 비공식낙인에 의해 매개된다는 것을 나타냈다. 이 연구의 정책적 함의를 논의한다.
Abstract
This study intends to test a labeling theory and examines the effects of informal labeling from the perspective of parents, teachers, and peers on delinquency. In addition, the present study constructs an integrated model and examines 1) whether social bonding variables and association with delinquent peers affect informal labeling, 2) whether social bonding variables, association with delinquent peers, negative self-identity mediate the effects of informal labeling on delinquency, and 3) whether the effect of prior delinquency on subsequent delinquency is mediated by informal labeling. Using a Youth Panel Data, this tests several hypotheses. Results show that prior delinquency, parental bond, academic performance, and association with delinquent peers are significant predictors of informal labeling and their effects on delinquency are mediated by informal labeling. In addition, this study finds that the effect of informal labeling on delinquency is mediated by academic performance, association with delinquent peers, and negative self-identity. Results also reveal that the effect of prior delinquency on subsequent delinquency is mediated by informal labeling. The policy implication of those results are discussed.
