Attitudes of elementary school teachers and college students toward the children of divorce This study investigated whether elementary school teachers and teachers' college students evaluated children's school adjustment differently depending on the family structure of children. Twenty-four types of vignettes developed by the author with the variation of family structure (mother-custody single family, father-custody single family, and two-parent family), gender, age, and adjustment level of the child were randomly distributed to 558 participants. Results showed that the importance of family structure in the evaluation of children's adjustment and prognosis varied depending on the participant's gender and present status. That is, male teachers' evaluation of children's adjustment level and/or prognosis varied according to family structures in the vignettes of maladjusted 2nd and 5th graders and well-adjusted 2nd graders, whereas female teachers' and male college students' evaluation varied only in the vignettes of well-adjusted 2nd graders and maladjusted 2nd graders, respectively. Interestingly, female college students' evaluation did not show any significant difference in any kind of vignettes. Further analysis of significant differences revealed that participants evaluated the adjustment level of children from single-families highly than that of children from two-parent families. These results were discussed in contrast with previous research which indicated teachers' negative attitudes toward the children of divorce.
