한국에 투자한 다국적기업의 지식창출 결정요인에 관한 실증분석: 연구개발성과를 중심으로

본 연구에서는 한국시장에 투자한 외국인투자기업들의 연구개발 성과를 결정짓는 요인이 무엇인가를 다국적기업 내부역량 활용과 투자대상국내 외부 네트워크와의 관계성 측면에서 살펴보고 있다. 일반적으로 다국적기업 자회사의 혁신역량은 다국적기업 글로벌 네트워크를 통한 지식 교류(다국적기업 배경)와 투자대상국내 외부 네트워크 주체들과의 지식 교류(투자대상국 배경) 정도에 의해 영향을 받게 된다. 한국에서 연구개발 활동을 수행하고 있는 150개 외국인투자기업을 대상으로 한 포아송회귀분석 결과, 내부 네트워크 관계인 글로벌 네트워크를 통한 기술지식 도입은 외국인투자기업의 연구개발 성과에 아무런 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 외부네트워크 관계에 있어서는 국내기업과의 전략적 제휴 관계와 대학·연구기관과의 공동연구개발 활동이 외국인투자기업의 연구개발 성과에 유의한 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 한국정부로부터 기술개발지금지원 수혜를 받는 기업들이 보다 우월한 연구개발 성과를 나타내는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 결과를 통해 특허 성과를 많이 내는 기업들은 대모기업에 대한 기술의존보다는 한국기업이나 기관과의 협력관계를 통해 더 많은 기술적 성과를 내는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 특허가 원천기술이나 제품설계 기술 등과 같이 고도의 기술적 역량을 필요로 하는 경우에는 모기업에 대한 의존도가 클 수 있지만, 외국기업들이 한국시장에서 출원하는 특허의 경우에는 주로 상품개량과 관련된 기술이 많으며, 이들 기술은 한국시장 특유적 지식을 요하기 때문에 한국기업이나 연구소·대학 등과 연계성을 갖고 한국시장을 공략하기 위한 제품기술 개발에 주력하기 때문인 것으로 해석할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper studies the influence of internal and external knowledge on innovation in subsidiaries of foreign firms in korea. The subsidiaries of the multinational corporation are simultaneously embedded in two knowledge contexts: (a) the internal multinational corporation comprised of the headquarters and other subsidiaries; and (b) an external environment of host country contexts. We develop hypotheses to suggest that subsidiary technological innovation depends on the knowledge linkage of the subsidiary with internal(global) network and with other entities in host country. Using data on 155 foreign R&D centers in korea, four hypotheses are tested in a Poisson model analysis. The paper finds that (1) the subsidiary's knowledge linkage to korean firms and research institutes(University and national research institutes), (b) financial R&D support from korean government have a positive impact on innovation. But, the knowledge inflow from internal global network has no significant effects on the MNC subsidiaries' R&D performance.
