이익조정이 재무분석가의 이익예측치에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 회계이익에 포함된 경영자의 이익조정이 회계정보이용자인 재무분석가의 이익예측치에 어떠한 차이를 가져오는지 이익조정의 크기와 발생방향을 각각 고려하여 분석하였다. 2000년부터 2002년까지 국내 증권사 홈페이지에 공표된 12,023개의 분석보고서에서 이익예측치를 추출하여 분석한 결과 이익조정의 크기가 크면 유의하게 이익예측오차가 크고 이익예측정확성이 낮아 이익조정의 크기에 의해 재무분석가의 이익예측치에 차이가 나타났다. 이는 이익조정의 크기가 큰 경우에는 작은 경우에 비해 재무분석가가 부정확한 회계이익을 사용하여 이익예측치를 산출하게 되므로 이익예측가능성이 하락하여 나타는 것으로 생각된다. 이익조정방향의 경우에는 부호가 양(+)이면 음(-)인 경우에 비해 이익예측오차가 크고 이익예측정확성은 낮았지만, 이익조정의 크기 및 기업특성요인을 통제하는 경우 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 그러나 두기간의 이익조정방향을 고려하는 경우 이익조정방향이 유지되면 변경되는 경우에 비해 유의하게 이익예측오차는 크고 이익예측정확성은 낮으며, 이는 기업특성 및 이익조정의 크기를 통제하는 경우에도 달라지지 않았다. 이익조정의 크기와 방향에 의해 재무분석가의 이익예측치에 차이가 나타나는 본 연구의 결과는 회계정보이용자가 재무분석가의 이익예측정보를 경제적 의사결정에 이용함에 있어 재량적 발생을 고려하여야 함을 의미한다.
Abstract
This study investigates how the magnitude and direction of discretionary accruals are associated with analysts' forecasts, using 12,023 forecasts issued at the webpage of Korean security companies over 2000 to 2002. We find that the magnitude of discretionary accruals is positively related with forecast error and negatively with forecast accuracy, while the direction of discretionary accruals are not significantly related with the characteristics of analysts' forecasts. However, when the direction of discretionary accruals is consistent over two consecutive years, analysts' forecasts are more optimistical and less accurate. This suggests that analysts take the magnitude and direction of discretionary accruals into consideration when they issue earnings forecasts. The results of this paper add evidence to the existing literature that analysts' forecasts are affected by discretionary accruals, and implies that analysts and investor should consider discretionary accruals when they use analysts' forecasts in their economic decision making.
