사업 유사성, 창업자 능력 및 연구개발의 상호작용이 벤처기업의 초기 성과에 미치는 영향 분석

초록
기술집약형 벤처기업의 대부분은 배태조직(incubating organization)으로부터 파생(spin-off) 되며 배태조직에서의 경험이 벤처기업의 초기성과에 많은 영향을 끼친다. 본 연구에서는 배태조직에서의 다양한 경험 변수를, 기회인식과 관련된 배태조직과의 사업유사성과 이 기회를 활용할 수 있는 창업자 능력으로 체계화하여 초기성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 특히 개별적인 경험 유형과 성과의 관계보다는 유사성, 능력과 연구개발간의 상호 작용에 대해 분석의 초점을 맞추었다.본 연구의 대상 기업은 정보통신산업에 속하며 창업자가 창업 이전에 근무하였던 배태조직이 있고 일정 수준의 기술력이 인정된 기술집약적 110개 벤처기업이다. 그리고 벤처기업의 성과분석에 있어서 문제가 되는 연구대상 표본기업의 다양성으로부터 발생하는 문제를 줄이기 위해 산업, 기업연령, 시기별 경기차이 등 환경변수를 제어하였으며 분석방법으로는 다중회귀분석방법을 사용하였다. 주요 분석 결과는 사업 유사성이 성과에 직접적으로 영향을 주지 않았고, 능력과의 상호 작용에 의한 관계역량의 발휘를 통해 성과에 영향을 주었는데 기술 유사성과 기술 능력보다는 시장 유사성과 시장능력이 성과 향상에 더 큰 영향을 끼친다는 것이다. 그리고 연구개발은 기술능력보다 시장능력과의 상호 작용에 의해 성과에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study attempts to explore the processes, through which founders' experiences and abilities and R&D efforts are combined to affect venture performance in the early stage. The objective of this paper is to analyze how those factors interact with each other to affect the performance of new ventures. We analyzed the performance of 110 IT ventures in Korea, using the OLS (Ordinary Least Square) multiple regression method. This study provides several important findings. First, market similarity and marketing ability turned out to be more important factors of venture performance than technological similarity and ability. But, it has also been found that technological and market similarities alone do not affect venture performance in a significant way, while market similarity does influence venture performance by interacting with marketing ability. Second, R&D affects venture performance in a significant way when the venture has marketing ability to get the R&D results to market.
