Abstract
This study focuses on the reliability and validity of the measurement of workaholism. The reality of the global working world shows us the seriousness of the quickly spreading workaholism. On the other hand there is no reliable measuring tool. So this study examines the reliability and validity of the tool of the Workaholics Anonymous, one of the biggest organization of the workaholics. The original tool consists of 20 relevant items. According to the result of my empirical research in which 157 teachers in S. Korea took part, three items had better be deleted out of the original checklist of the Workaholics Anonymous. The socio-cultural difference in two countries could be the main background in explaining the reason. So was the revised tool retested, after deleting the relatively meaningless 3 items. The new tool showed the Cronbach's alpha coefficient is 0.85. The construct validity of the new tool can be explained by the fact that the 5 factors of the workaholism account for 61.5% of the total variance. The empirically identified 5 factors were over-commitment, self-identification with work, control-perfectionism, anxiety or fear, and finally, performance-orientation. To the conclusion, it would be desirable to use a revised measurement tool of workaholism in Korea, which is from the socio-cultural perspective more appropriate than the original one.
