환경오염 유발사건이 기업가치에 미치는 영향

초록
본 연구는 환경오염유발이 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 1991년 3월 두산전자(주)의 낙동강 페놀사건에 대한 언론보도가 두산그룹 계열사와 소속산업의 주식수익률에 미치는 영향을 사건보도일을 전후한 누적초과수익률(CAR)의 유의성을 통해 분석하였다. 분석결과에 의하면, 페놀사건의 언론보도에 따른 두산그룹 계열사의 주식수익률은 사건일 직후에 유의적으로 하락하였지만, 장기간 지속적으로 하락하지는 않은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 두산전자(주)의 소속산업 기업의 누적초과수익률은 사건보도일 이후에 유의적으로 하락하여 자본시장이 환경오염 유발로 인한 소속산업의 규제비용이 증가할 것이라는 기대를 반영하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 기업의 환경오염유발은 관련 기업 및 소속산업의 가치에 부정적인 영향을 주고 있음을 보여주는 본 연구결과는 기업차원에서 보다 적극적인 환경오염 방지노력의 필요성을 제기한다. 또한, 기업의 환경관련정보를 재무제표에 반영하도록 한 기업회계기준 도입의 타당성을 간접적으로 지지하는 결과일 뿐만 아니라, 투자자 입장에서도 환경오염유발에 따른 관련 기업 및 산업의 주가변동을 예측하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
This study examines abnormal returns around the day of the environmental pollution incident is announced. Event study methodology is undertaken for analysis. The empirical evidence shows that a significant negative reaction occurred in abnormal returns of the group subsidiaries and the intra-industry firms. The significant decrease of abnormal return is detected on the around newspaper reports days in Doosan group firms and related industry firms.This result suggests that investors interpreted such incident disclosures as a negative sign of firm subsidiaries and related industry firms' exposure to future regulatory costs. Although both groups of firms are affected negatively, there is evidence that the firms directly competing in the market with the incident firms were less affected than group subsidiaries.From a accounting policy perspective, the result implies that it is worthwhile to disclose environmental information on financial reporting(that is, footnotes). It may be necessary to recognize the potential expense related to the penalty as a contingent liability by evaluating the probability of not observing the standards.
