The purpose of this study is to estimate phonological/articulation production of school-age children with mental retardation by whole-word approach. It measure, that is, PWC, PWWC, and PWP point out that during the acquisition process children attempt to learn and say words, not phonemes/segments, and thus word-oriented measures can assist the clinician to better understand a child's phonological system and the child's learning. these are used to expand not only the sound system and syllable shapes, but also increase the child's overall word complexity, especially, for children with mental retardation. 11 school-age children with mental retardation and 22 normal children who to match language age and chronological age were participated in this study. over 50 Utterances Sample were gathered and analyzed Each child for 30 min by playing hospital and housekeeping. This article has argued that we need to broaden our research focus to include the study of children`s whole-word productions. Toward this end, three measures to look at whole-words are proposed: the Proportion of Whole-Word Correctness(PWC), the Proportion of Whole-Word Complexity(PWWC), and the Proportion of Whole-Word Proximity(PWP).The results of this study was as follows; First, there are significant difference in PWC, PWWC, PWP between mental retardation group and normal children to match chronological age, but normal children to match language age. Second, consonant articulation score were positive highly related PWC, PWWC and PWP, but vowel articulation score.
