초록
＞최근 기업들 사이에서 BSC가 성과측정시스템으로서 인기를 끌고 있지만 전통적 성과측정시스템과 비교해 볼 때 BSC가 더 우수한 성과를 가져온다는 증거가 미약하다는 비판을 받기도 한다. 이러한 지적을 감안하여 본 논문은 과연 BSC가 기업 재무성과의 개선을 가져오는지를 확인함을 목적으로 한다. 분석에 필요한 자료는 증권거래소에 상장된 32개 기업(BSC 도입기업 16개 그리고 BSC 비도입기업 16개)으로부터 수집하였다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, BSC 도입기업의 주가수익률이 BSC 비도입기업보다 일관되게 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 재무성과들(총자산이익률, 자기자본이익률, 매출이익률, 매출원가율 그리고 재고자산회전율)은 BSC 도입기업이 BSC 비도입기업보다 유의적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 재무성과의 향상은 BSC 도입기업에서 일관되게 강하게 나타났다. 또한, BSC 실행의 개선이 기업의 장기성과로 이어진다는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결론부분에서는 연구의 요약, 이론적 공헌, 한계점을 논의하였으며 미래연구에 대한 제안을 하였다.
Abstract
Although the BSC has gained popularity among organizations as a performance measurement system, little empirical evidence exists to substantiate claims that the BSC promotes superior financial performance when compared to traditional performance measurement systems. The purpose of this study is to find out whether an improvement in financial performance is due to the implementation of BSC. We used the sample data that was obtained from the Korean Stock Market for 32 firms(16 from the BSC firm and 16 from non-BSC firm). The results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, BSC firms’ stock returns are consistently higher than those of non-BSC firms. Second, the financial performances(ROA, ROE, NI/E, COGS/E, and COSG/I) are significantly higher for the BSC firms than for the non-BSC firms. The performance improvement is consistently stronger within BSC firms compared to non BSC firms. Also, we could find the evidence which supports the fact that the long-term performance of BSC firms has been improved. Theoretical contributions, limitations, and future research directions are discussed at the end of the paper.
