A Study on Teacher' Understanding on Basic Design in Elementary Design Education

In order to understand the current situation of elementary design education in Korea, I analyzed elementary art and design textbooksconcentrating on pedagogical methods and purposes of each chapterand teachers’ thoughts on design education first, I selected some artworks from the textbooks; second, surveyed on pedagogical methods and purposes; third, analyzed the different opinions on design education between elementary school teachers and other design professionals. The survey showed that compared to other design professionals, more elementary school teachers suggested "drawing," "crafting," and "decorating" as proper educational methods for design. As a purpose of design education, school teachers placed emphases more on "improvement of expressional capability" and "applicability" than on other elements. The result of this research is expected to be used as a primary source for developing teaching guidelines of the design education of the next generation; the result of this research on the teachers’sense of design and their understanding on design education will be used as a source material for the development of teaching guidelines, so that the pedagogical purpose and methods can directly be applied to the design education of the future generation.
