Fundamentals of Design Business and its Expansion

This paper considers the possibilities of design business based on its genuine attributes in order to help for the re-establishment of Korean design business, which situation has gotten worse. To have more detail research results, the attributes of design as a service, potential type of business for design based on some of other research results, and global design trend, which can affect Korean design business were examined. The examination result shows that the attributes of design as a process is quiet equivalent to the attributes of service. It also shows that there are lots of types of design business, which can help design firms to find a chance for the profitable future business. In addition, it shows that the fundamentals of design business are design knowledge, design skill and a way of design thinking. The 'design thinking' which represents those three fundamentals would be the key factor for the future success. To meet the challenge, design consultancies in Korea should transform their form creation based business tradition into the innovation-centered business, and assail the task to set the design thinking as their internal capability. Finallly, design service business, design brand business, and design value applied business were suggested as a model of design business.
