도시디자인의 본질에 관한 연구

초록
도시디자인은 현재 한국 사회의 주요 이슈이다. 도시와 디자인의 합성어로 이루어진 도시디자인은 매우 복합적이고 광의적이며 추상적인 개념이나, 이는 도시디자인이 궁극적으로는 도시민에게 만족할만한 삶의 경험을 제공함과 동시에 도시의 매력도를 증진시킴으로 경제적 부의 가치를 창출하기 때문이다. 본 논고는 도시디자인 정책의 수립에 있어서 무엇보다도 도시디자인의 본질을 명확히 이해하는 것이 중요하다는 생각에서 연구를 하게 되었다. 본 논고에서는 도시디자인의 본질을 추출하기 위하여 도시와 디자인을 독자적인 개념으로 분리하여 목적과 본질을 연구한 이후 도시디자인의 개념과 본질을 재정의 하였다. 진화적 유기체로서의 도시와 디자인은 과정과 가치, 사람, 그리고 지속가능성을 중요시하며, 이들의 결과체인 도시디자인 역시 과정과 가치를 중시하면서 도시 환경과 도시민이 교감 (interaction)하고 소통할 수 있는 삶의 경험을 디자인한다. 즉, 도시디자인의 본질은 가치 혁신(value innovation)을 통해 만족할만한 삶의 경험(desirable life experience)을 디자인하고 이를 통해 삶이 있는 도시환경의 지속가능성을 추구하는데 있다고 할 수 있겠다.
Abstract
Urban design is the main issue in Korean society, as it aims to creat desirable life experiences for citizens and economic as well as innovative values by boosting urban attractiveness, even though urban design, as a compound word of urban and design, is an abstract, complex and broad term. This research attempts to define the essentials of urban design in the hopes of being help in making policies. This research attempts to re-define the definition and essentials of urban design by defining a city and design respectively. A city as an evolving organism and design take accounts on value-oriented, process-oriented, human-centered process, and sustainability. As a result, urban design as a compound word of a city and design which counts for process and values designs life experiences urban environment and citizens can interact and communicate openly. In other words, urban design essential lies both in designing desirable life experiences through value innovation and pursuing sustainable urban environment citizen's lives are imprinted.
