프라이스는 1차 세계대전이라는 불필요하고 비도덕적인 대규모 폭력행위가 거짓과 사실 왜곡에 근거하여 정당화되고 있다고 판단하였고, 그에 따라 그는 영국 동맹국인 러시아의 실제 현실을 영국 국민에게 알려주고자 맨체스터 가디언 지의 특파원으로 러시아에 갔다. 그는 러시아에서 1917년 3월에 혁명이 발생하자, 그것이 비극적인 전쟁에서 벗어날 길을 전 세계에 보여주었다고 판단하여 적극 환영하였고 그 혁명이 외부의 개입 없이 발전할 수 있기를 기대하였다. 하지만 영국을 포함한 연합국들은 러시아혁명의 발전에 비판적이었고 11월 혁명 이후에는 직접적인 군사적 개입까지도 감행하였다. 이런 상황에서 프라이스는 러시아혁명을 더욱 적극적으로 옹호하게 되었으며, 심지어 러시아혁명을 인류 역사의 새로운 단계로 나아가는 중요한 이정표로 높이 평가하였다. 동시에 프라이스는 러시아혁명을 경험하면서 볼셰비키 이데올로기, 적어도 계급투쟁 담론을 받아들이는 등 정치적으로 급진화되었을 뿐 아니라, 점차 그런 관점에서 영국 사회를 바라보게 되었다. 이렇게 러시아혁명에 대한 프라이스의 평가는 영국의 대외 정책에 대한 그의 태도와 밀접한 관련성을 맺고 있었으며, 그에 따라 그 시대의 편견, 우려, 희망 등에서 벗어날 수 없었던 것이다.
Abstract
M. P. Price thought that the First World War was unnecessary and immoral and that it could be possible only on the basis of lies and fictitious facts. Thus, he regarded it as his own duty to go to Russia and inform British people of what was really going on. In 1917, Price found in the Russian Revolution a road out of the catastrophic war. From this prospect he gave moral support to the Russian Revolution and hoped that it would develop with no intervention from outside. Yet the Allied Governments including British one were critical to the advancement of the Russian Revolution and, after the November Revolution, helped the anti-soviet elements in search of overthrowing the Soviet government. Therefore Price stood for Soviet Russia against the Allied Intervention and gradually identified himself with the Bolshevik party and its Government. In this way, on one hand, Price's assessments of the Russian Revolutions reflected his attitudes toward British government’s policies on the First World War and the Russian Revolutions. On the other hand, his experiences in Russia exerted a considerable influence on his thoughts of the British Society.
