애널리스트 허딩행태의 합리성 검토

본 연구는 2003년부터 2006년까지 4년 동안에 FN-Guide 데이터베이스에 수록된 국내 애널리스트의 예측자료를 이용하여, 애널리스트의 이익예측 허딩행태가 합리적인지 비합리적인지 여부를 검토하였다. 기업별 애널리스트 허딩수준이 기업 가치에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 검증하여, 애널리스트의 이익예측 허딩 경향을 투자자들이 과연 합리적인 예측행태로 인식하고 있는지 아니면 비합리적인 행태로 인식하고 있는지를 간접적으로 밝히는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 분석결과 첫째, 허딩 수준이 높은 기업들과 허딩 수준이 낮은 기업들 간의 토빈 Q 평균값에는 유의적인 양(+)의 차이가 있음을 발견하였다. 둘째, 허딩 애널리스트의 비율은 토빈 Q와 유의적인 양(+)의 회귀계수를, 예측이익표준편차는 토빈의 Q와 유의적인 음(-)의 회귀계수를 나타냈다. 이는 우리나라 자본시장에서 애널리스트의 허딩수준은 기업가치에 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 미치고 있으며, 허딩 수준이 높은 기업일수록 기업가치가 증가하고 있음을 의미한다. 종합적인 분석결과 국내 자본시장에서는 투자자들이 허딩수준이 높은 기업에 대해 긍정적이고 유리한 평가를 내리고 있으며, 애널리스트의 허딩을 비합리적이고 비효율적인 예측행태로 인식하기보다는 합리적인 예측행태로 파악하고 있음을 의미하는 연구결과이다.
Abstract
Using a Korean financial analysts' earnings forecast data, this study examined the impact of financial analysts' herding level on firm value in the 2003-2006 period. In doing so, the purpose of this study is to investigate indirectly whether investors do recognize financial analysts' earnings forecast herding propensity as rational forecast behavior or irrational one. First, firms with higher herding level show significantly greater Tobin-Q value than firms with lower herding level. Second, the estimated coefficients of herding level is positively related to Tobin-Q value at the 5% or 1% significance level. It indicates that firm value is significantly higher for firms with more herding forecasts. As this result is not consistent with the extant view that market participants will penalize herding behavior. Overall results provide interesting evidence that investors do not evaluate firms with higher herding propensity unfavorably. In Korean capital market, investors do recognize herding behavior as an efficient and rational forecast behavior rather than inefficient and irrational one.
