생산의 해외전개와 산업 재구조화: 창원 지역의 사례

This paper examines the patterns of oversea direct investments(ODIs) and their possible impacts on the industrial restructuring in Changwon, the home of Korea's largest mechanical and metal cluster. The analysis focuses on exploring what impacts overseas deployment of production makes on the local employment and how. Not only large but also small and medium firms has been acceleratingly increasing ODIs to Asia centering around China, Oversea production deployment involves reorganizing the social division of labour and the global production networks of local finns. While ODIs have lead to reduced domestic investment, Changwon's industrial production and employment has been growing. There is little evidence of the hollowing-out of the manufacturing as a whole in Changwon, though some sectors have cut back employment. Overseas depolyment of production reorganizes the social division of labour towards increasing pressure of cost reduction on the part of small and medium suppliers which lack technological capabilities. It increases employment insecurites, downgrading wages and other working conditions.
