A Criticism on "I'm A Cyborg But That's OK(2006)"

고정희(아주대학교)

7권, 9~30쪽

초록

The goal of this paper is to elucidate the reason why most critics fail to analyze the contents of "I'm a cyborg but that's ok" which is the movie directed by Park Chan-wook in 2006. I think the reason might be because the director makes the movie's concept difficult in regards to interpreting psychological symbols. To prove this assumption an analysis was undertaken on psychological symbols in the movie and as a result, some of the director's tricks were revealed. Firstly, the director doesn't want to be interpreted by a so called intelligent group or critics. So he intentionally misleads the critics who think they know psychological symbols well to attain the wrong conclusion about the movie. For example the motive of 'rat-paranoia' mixes with Freud's study of 'rat-human' in a way to make audiences believe that this is directly related to his study but this misperception was found to be incorrect. This motive is freely connected with the heroin's grand mother and hero's obsessive behaviour. Secondly, the heroin's anger about the irrational world can be interpreted with the rebellion about the patriarchical society, but the director down plays that kind of interpretation to be nonsense. What he wanted to do is to make the critics embarrassed because they can not analyze the symbols which are contradictory to each other in the movie. Actually the movie is just the representation of the stereotype about love between two people who can not adjust to society in general, but it is true that diverse tricks and contradictory symbols make the movie unique.
