Educational Programs and Method of Civil Law at Law School, Chungnam National University

On 5th December the Chungnam National University announced 100 applicants who are entitled to enroll as students in its law school. It tries to provide the best possible learning environment for students with a wide range of programs. This article is to introduce the curriculum and educational method of law school at Chungnam National University. The program of law school is of 3-year duration with rigorous coursework, practice and term examination. The first year of law school introduces to students fundamental legal theory and legal research and writing. During the first year students must take required courses in civil (procedure) law, constitutional law, criminal law, administrative and enterprise law. During the second and third year of law school students are encouraged to follow an academic curriculum customized to their individual interests. Especially the features of program with regard to civil law are given below. The courses for civil law consist of required and elective courses. The required program for civil law includes introduction to civil law, contract law Ⅰ, contract law Ⅱ, property law and non-contractual law. Students attend these courses during 2 semesters of the first year. Every course is taught in a section of about 50 students. Students of law school may also attend programs for basic and advanced case study for civil law as elective courses during the second or third year. In respect of the teaching method in law school Socratic method and lecture method are being discussed. The latter has been widely used in majority of courses at college of law in Korea. However, professors of law school have to discuss and decide how to teach their students. Furthermore it is very important to prepare the materials and text for every class.
